Frequently Asked Questions
What is an electric bike?
In short, electric bikes are just regular bicycles that have several electrical components added to them like a motor, a battery, and a controller. All the components are seamlessly integrated into the design. Just think of an e-bike as a supercharged version of your favorite bike from back in the day.
Who can ride an electric bike?
Our e-bikes were built with every type of rider in mind. Whether you're a seasoned pro or haven't ridden since you were a kid, we designed MOD bikes to be low maintenance and very easy to use.
How do electric bikes work?
The first thing to mention here is that every one of our models can be used just as a normal bicycle would. Everything you need to pedal and navigate your bike manually is still there.
The electric components of an e-bike typically there to amplify human power. The features make it easier on the rider to go wherever they want. Hills are easier. Wind is more manageable. You can get to places quicker and by using less energy.
Depending on which MOD electric bike model you use, you’ll have different option riding options: pedal-assist, torque sensor, and all-electric (using a throttle). You’ll always have the opportunity to just pedal as well, and each bike is equipped with seven gears.
Do I need a license to drive an electric bike?
NO! Federal law considers electric bicycles in the class as regular bicycles, provided they meet two conditions: (1) the top speed in “electric only” mode is 20 miles per hour; and (2) the motor power must be no more than 750W.
MOD electric bicycles meet both of the federal requirements. In our all-electric mode, the top speed is 20 miles per hour. Of course, you can go even faster by pedaling as well. As for our motors, MOD e-bikes motors do not cross the 750W limit,
Consequently, electric bikes do not need a special registration, license, or insurance to operate. Moreover, they enjoy the same privileges as regular bicycles, such as being allowed to travel in available bike lanes.
However, different states have their own special requirements regarding electric bike use. While most follow the federal lead, some do vary. Please reach out to your local transportation department for up-to-date information.
Do I need to know how to ride a bicycle to ride an electric bike?
No, you do not need to know how to ride a bicycle to ride an electric bike. While it certainly makes it a bit easier to get the hang of our electric bikes if you’ve ridden a bicycle in the past, our e-bikes are designed for everyone. Our models are easy to balance and most of them come equipped with a throttle, so there’s no need to worry about pedaling!
Schedule a test drive, and we will help you get comfortable on a MOD bike before you head out for your next adventure.
What is pedal assist and how does it work?
In this mode, you can take advantage of combined human plus electric power. When you turn on your MOD e-bike, the motor will gently provide electric power as you pedal. You can still switch gears as the terrain changes to take advantage of more torque or faster speed. It’s an amazing feeling to use pedal-assist mode, as it makes cycling effortless, flattens out the hills, and frees you to just enjoy yourself and the scenery.
Pedal-assist mode provides adjustable levels of assistance. The levels simply indicate how much additional power the motor will provide to complement your pedaling. The low setting will help you to get to a 5 mph speed while pedaling, while the high level will help you to get to 25 mph! A simple press of a button switches you through the different levels.
When you’re just starting out on your MOD electric bike, get used to the pedal-assist on the lowest level before increasing the power. It’s a wonderful component, but you do need to use caution when implementing it.
